If you've ever wondered what it would be like to have a tail instead of legs, here's your chance! Why choose a boring costume for a Halloween or masquerade party when you can have a mermaid costume? Such an enchanting costume would be quite the attention-grabber at any event you might be attending.

A mermaid costume can be put together quite easily. It's entirely up to you as to whether you choose to buy one, have one made to your specifications, or even sew a mermaid costume yourself! Everything can be chosen to suit your preferences, from tail colours, fabric and wig styles right down to finding the perfect accessories for your mermaid costume.

Mermaid costume patterns and ideas

Mermaid costumes are not just for Halloween! For those skilled at sewing, there are several commercial mermaid tail patterns available. This makes it easy to sew your own mermaid costume in the exact colours and fabrics you choose.

Swimmable tails and monofins

If your desire is to swim in a mermaid tail, use a swimming monofin to emulate the experience of having a tail. It's also highly recommended to have a swimming tail professionally made if you plan to swim in it. Swimming tails are usually made of latex or silicone, which takes some time and skill to work with.

Mermaid cosplay accessories

Once you have a basic mermaid costume assembled, it's time to choose just the right accessories to complete the look! If your costume is just the tail, you'll need a top to go with it. Either wear a bikini or tank top, or the more daring might choose a sea shell bikini top to appear more authentic. You can also add shell leis for necklaces and bracelets, or some inexpensive freshwater pearls would work just as well. Those would-be mermaids with short hair would benefit from a long-haired mermaid wig, perhaps in a fantasy colour.
