Coney Island Mermaid Parade

What is the Coney Island Mermaid Parade?
The Mermaid Parade of Coney Island, New York was founded in 1983 by Dick Zigun, and is done in the tradition of early Coney Island Mardi Gras celebrations. It is held on the Saturday closest to the start of summer (circa 21 June). Partial to near-full nudity is common during the festival, but the parade itself is also very much a family event with numerous children present. Parade participants dress in costume, typically a mermaid or merman --- though other sea creatures, pirates, and sailors are frequently seen. The parade attracts many thousands of spectators each year and is one of Coney Island's biggest annual attractions.
