History of Weeki Wachee Springs, Florida
Weeki Wachee Springs is a Roadside America attraction founded in 1946 by Newton Perry. He had the site cleared and a theatre built to house underwater mermaid shows right in the spring. The doors opened 13 October 1947. By the 1950s it had become one of the most popular American tourist attractions with crowds coming to see the mermaids swimming. Former mermaids even come to perform each year in special Mermaids of Yesteryear shows.Weeki Wachee Springs is open every day of the year except Thanksgiving and Christmas. It is located in Spring Hill, Florida at the intersection of SR 50 and Hwy 19.
